- Seating Plan - Groups for next assignment.
- Submit all journals/chapter summaries - Due today (dead date is tomorrow at 3pm)
- Review our plot diagram.
- It is important not to confuse a theme of a literary work with its subject. Subject is a topic that acts as a foundation for a literary work, while a theme is an opinion expressed on the subject. For example, a writer may choose a subject of war for his story, and the theme may be his personal opinion that war is a curse for humanity. Discussion on theme statements: Introduce the concept of hope, which should have been evident through out the story. Each group will talk about hope and the The Cage. Share out by creating a poster to identify four quotes, page numbers and a brief explanation. Also, create a theme statement for the novel The Cage. The Holocaust is not a theme. Reflect back on your journal entries to assist with this assignment. These will be shared out to the class.
- Introduce the final summative assignment: creating a book trailer. In groups of four (chosen by me) students will:
- Goal: Your task is to create a movie trailer for the Cage by Ruth Minsky Sender which includes up to five key events that tells her story of the impact of WWII on herself, her family and her community.
- Role: You are a film producer.
- Audience: Your target audience are people who want to learn about the Holocaust from the perspective of a survivor.
- Situation: As a film producer, you need to create a trailer to promote the film based on 5 key events that tells Ruth’s story.
- Product: 3-4 minutes book trailer
- Standard: The movie trailer will be assessed based on (Cii & iii), and (D v) see rubric for more details.
- To start, we will be looking at some good and bad examples of trailers.
- To help you stay organized during this project, you will be required to complete a trailer template and story board. These must be done prior to beginning filming/technology.
- Here are some links for royalty free music and photos to be included in your video. Twenty Free Music Sites and Top Ten Websites for Copyright Free Photographs.
- As this will be group work, your group will be assigned a mark together. To ensure that these are as accurate as possible, you will be completing a self assessment/reflection at the end. Imagine your group is being paid $100 for your trailer. Does everyone get the same amount? Why or why not. Remember in group work, its not just/always working equally but fairly, playing to everyone's strengths.
- These will be due at the end of class on Wednesday May 8th. We will be watching them as a class on May 9th. Please make sure that you are saving the file in a way that it can be shared with me to show to the class. Here are a couple video links to show you how to change it. Link 1 and link 2.
Day Eleven: May 10th
- We will be joining Ms. Bazley's class in the library for a guest speaker from the legion talking about his father's experiences in WWII and the Holocaust.
