- Explain how the Cold War was "cold" in that it did not involve direct fighting. What did it involve? (spying, influence and lack of communication) USA vs USSR Fighting & Igor Gouzenko, A Canadian Connection.
- Unit overview: Read through up to and including the HOT points (these topics match with your chapter questions)
- Discuss the United Nations: Review Chart; Goal is collective security. What are 3 mains things the UN can do to an aggressor?

- Cold War Hot Conflicts: Cold War Events GSlides
- Korea: Was divided into communist North and Democratic south. 1950 N invades S. UN force backed by USA/Canada helps. 1953 ceasefire was reached but no formal end.
- Suez: Br/Fr - Gammal Nasser (Egpyt) siezed it in 1956. Threatened Israel, Br/Fr support Israeli war. USA is mad. Louis St. Laurent (our pm denounced Britain, not in support) Minister of External Affairs, Lester B Pearson (later a PM in 1960s) creates and sends in the UNEF (emergency force) to peace keep. He receives a noble peace prize for defusing the conflict
- Cuban Missile Crisis: 1962, Kennedy, blockade of Cuba. Brinkmanship, Khrushchev backs down
- Vietnam: N(communists) vs S (democratic). 1960's US sends troops, not just $ aid like before. USSR/China support the North. 1973 the USA begin to leave. 1975 communists win. Vietnam war pictures and watch Apocalypse Now clip.
- Cold War Conflicts Poster Gallery Walk: Student handout - students will walk around the room looking at posters made by the SS11 students about the Conflicts of the Cold War. They will explain what happened, record the impacts and rate the significance.
- Work on Chapter Questions, play protest music.
