Lesson One:
- Go to the library to review the book options. There are several options but each book requires at least three people reading it in small groups to make the activities work so please choose a couple that you are interested in.
- Once you have chosen and book and signed it out, return to the classroom to read for the remainder of the block.
- When all students are back, we will divide out sections of the books and set up checkpoints for students.
- Small activities will be assigned during the reading process. You will meet as a group with those reading the same book to discuss, like a book club.
Lesson Two:
- Students will have more time to read and the complete an First Impressions Free write. See the side board for specific due dates and page checkpoints.
- Afterwards, we will start out poetry unit. The next few weeks will include some time spent reading (about 20 minutes each day) and the rest of the block on poetry. If students can not hit their check points with that time then some time will have to be spent at home reading. This will vary depending on which book they chose.
Lesson Three:
- Introduce the Lit Circle Roles. Each week we will hold a "book club meeting" where students will discuss what they have read so far. In prep for each of these, students will need to have chosen one of the five roles and complete the action described. Students will meet to decide who is doing each role, no doubles, and students can't repeat a role so plan accordingly. These mini assignments should be mostly done by the time the group meets. They will be due the next day. See the side board for specific dates/pages.
Lesson Four:
- Character Development: Review how characters are developed.
- Students will complete one of the two options about their story's protagonist. Whose Phone is this? or Character Autopsy.
- This will be the first main assignment for our Lit Circle.
Lesson Five:
- Identifying theme within the novels. This is the second main assignment.
Lesson Six:
- Once finished your novel, complete a Five in One for your final assignment. This is the final main assignment.
